English is a West Germanic language that originated in medieval England, evolving from the Anglo-Frisian dialects brought by Germanic invaders in the 5th century. Old English developed into Middle English following the Norman Conquest in 1066, incorporating a significant number of French loanwords. Early Modern English emerged in the 15th century, influenced by the Renaissance, the invention of the printing press, and standardization of spelling and grammar. Over time, English spread globally through colonization, trade, and cultural influence, becoming the lingua franca of international communication, science, and business. Today, English is spoken by hundreds of millions as a first language and by billions as a second language, with diverse dialects and rich literary, scientific, and cultural traditions.
Mae Cymraeg yn iaith Geltaidd Brythonig a siarir yng Nghymru. Mae ei hanes yn dyddio'n ôl i'r Oesoedd Canol, gyda llenyddiaeth a barddoniaeth hynafol yn tystio i'w defnydd cynnar. Yn ystod y canrifoedd, cafodd y Gymraeg effaith gan Lladin, Saesneg a rhai ieithoedd eraill trwy fasnach a chrefydd. Yn y 19eg a'r 20fed ganrif, cafodd y Gymraeg ei safoni ar gyfer addysg, llywodraeth a llenyddiaeth. Heddiw, mae Cymraeg yn cael ei ddefnyddio yn helaeth mewn addysg, cyfryngau, busnes a llywodraeth, gan gadw treftadaeth ddiwylliannol a llenyddol gyfoethog.
